Recall our 3.1.2 Vector Model of Mass-Spring Chain. How can we write our displacement vector-valued function u(t) using 4.2 Column Vector Addition?

Solution. Let x0 be our mass positions at equilibrium.

x0=[x1x2]

Let x(t) be our mass positions at time t.

x(t)=[x1(t)x2(t)]

To find displacement, we subtract the position at time t from our initial position. Thus,

u(t)=[u1(t)u2(t)]=[x1(t)x1x2(t)x2]=[x1(t)x2(t)][x1x2]=x(t)x0.

Remark. The operation we used is column vector subtraction which stems from column vector addition.
